Poplar Class

Welcome to Poplar Class

Hello and welcome to Poplar Class. We are a mixed class of year 5 and year 6 children taught by Miss Partington. Miss Maple is our teaching assistant.

The children will also have Mr Allen for PE and Mrs Haddon for Forest School on alternate Tuesdays.

UKS2 Autumn 2018 Survival

In the Autumn term, year 5 and 6 will be learning all about survival in the context of natural disasters including volcanic eruptions, extreme weather, earthquakes etc. We will think about how people survive and overcome such incidents. We would like to kickstart our learning with preview work to be completed over the summer holiday. This will give your child a significant advantage in their learning and will help to shape the direction of our curriculum – a very exciting opportunity!

Survival – pre-learning task

We are following the FOCUS scheme for English which is based on the in depth study of a book.  Over 5-6 weeks the children will do lots of discussion, role play and writing based on this book.

This term will be reading Survival, Kensuke’s Kingdom and The Man who Walked Between Towers.

Every English starts with a grammar starter covering the grammar curriculum for year 5 and 6.  This will be tested on regularly.

We would like your children to read at least three times a week at home, more if possible. We have a reward system in place where your child’s diary is stamped along with their reading card, and prizes to be won too. Reading Worm certificates are awarded every week to regular readers.

Spellings rules are taught throughout the week. These are based on the Common exception word list for year 5 and 6.  New word lists are sent out on Monday and tested on Friday.  We will also be covering spelling rules based on the year 5 and 6 spelling curriculum.

We follow the year 5 and 6 Maths curriculum with each child accessing the appropriate support, strategies and challenge according to their prior learning, attainment and year group.  We focus on one objective each week and the aim is that all children have mastered this by the end of the week.  This will be through practise and consolidation activities including using pictures and resources such as place value counters.

Each week the children will complete a times tables test.  It is expected that by the time the children are in year 5, that they all have rapid recall of ALL tables facts up to 12×12.

Please encourage and support your child with accessing TT Rockstars to help them to practise their tables facts.

This term we will be learning about electricity in Science.  We will recap on different kinds of circuits, experiment with different components in the circuits.  This will lead us into a Dragon’s Den group activity towards Christmas.  Who will impress the Dragons?

More information will follow shortly.

If you have any questions or matters that you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to make an appointment through Mrs Nicolls in the office or catch myself at the end of the day for minor things – My door is always open.

See you in September!
