Poplar Class

Welcome to Poplar Class

We are a mixed age class of years 3 and 4 taught by Miss Partington as the full-time class teacher.

We are lucky to be taught PE once a week by Mr Allen, Duke Street’s PE specialist, who also supports us in class as a teaching assistant in the mornings. Miss Parkinson teaches us French, RE and PHSE and Miss Clitheroe teaches us computing. Miss Clitheroe also support us in class in the afternoons as a teaching assistant.

If you have any worries or concerns then don’t hesitate to speak to us, we are always available to answer any questions you may have. Alternatively, you can make an appointment to see us with Mrs. Nicholls at the front office.

Our topic for Spring term 2018 is ‘Water, water everywhere’. We will be exploring rivers and rainforests within this unit. Focussing on key vocabulary to name and explain the main parts of a river as well as developing our understanding of the water cycle. We will also receive an in-school workshop from United Utilities focussing on water, where it comes from and where it goes. As part of our topic, we will also be undertaking a local river study in Duxbury woods this term.  Another aspect which we will be exploring is rainforests. We will discover what they are, what animals and vegetation are found there and why it is important to our planet as well as the dangers rainforests are currently facing.

The focus in Science will be living things and their habitats. We will explore MRS GREN to develop an understanding of living things and use this to help explain why something is living and something is non-living. We will also look at many different living organisms in our school surrounding and use iPads and books to identify and define each living organism found. We will also be looking at how living things adapt to their surroundings, thus demonstrating sensitivity from MRS GREN and identifying and exploring the various habitats of living organisms all around the world.

Times Table practise

In year 3/4, the recall of multiplication facts are very important. We encourage you to practise regularly with your child, from x2 up to x12 tables. Here are some websites you could use;

It is a government expectation that all children, by the end of Year 4, know all of their times table facts.

We have also recently begun using Times Table Rockstars. This is a fantastic programme which allows the children to practice, compete and earn virtual prizes both in school and at home. Your child will have brought home more information regarding this and should know their own login – please enquire if this is not the case.

We would be grateful if all children in Poplar class were encouraged to use this programme as much as possible to further develop their confidence in multiplication.

We would like your children to read at least three times a week. Children will receive raffle tickets for all home reading and will be entered into a weekly prize draw! They will also move along the clouds further up our reading display to reach the target 50 reads this term! Children will receive a ‘book worm’ certificate weekly for regular reading.

Maths homework will be sent out every Thursday and due in the next Wednesday. Spellings will be given out on Monday and tested on Friday.

Our P.E days are on Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure that your child has their full indoor/outdoor P.E kit in school. Also make sure that your child has taken out their earrings or has tape over their earrings.

If your child requires medical attention in school please contact Mrs Nicholls and complete the relevant forms to keep school updated and keep your child safe in school.

Thank you for your continued support and Happy New Year from Poplar Class!
